Colombian legend James Rodriguez joined Liga MX side Club Leon on a free transfer, the club announced on Monday.
He joins Leon after terminating his contract with La Liga side Rayo Vallecano despite just signing with the Spanish side this past summer. Following an impressive 2024 Copa America with Colombia, the 33-year-old was expected to have an immediate impact after signing Vallecano. However, he only saw the field for 205 minutes across a measly seven games before terminating his contract with the club.
He will now join up with his new teammates to prepare for the upcoming Clausura, which begins on Jan. 18
“Rayo Vallecano de Madrid and Club Leon of Mexico have reached an agreement for the transfer of James Rodrigues,” Vallecano said in a statement. “From the club, we wish James the best of luck in his new stage.”
After a storied career playing with top European clubs such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Porto and Monaco, James has recently found his club career to be more tumultuous. With his move to León, he will have now played for six different clubs since 2021. This includes Everton in England, Al-Rayyan in Qatar, Olympiacos in Greece, São Paulo in Brazil, Rayo Vallecano and now Leon.
On top of the upcoming Clausura, Leon is also preparing to participate in the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup that is set to begin this June. They have been drawn into Group D where they will face Premier League side Chelsea, Brazilian side Flamengo and Tunisian side Espérance de Tunis.
The opportunity to participate in the Club World Cup was definitely a draw for Rodríguez who, in the twilight of his career, will have another opportunity to compete on the biggest stage.
