Manchester City are set to sign young Brazilian center-back Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for a reported fee of €35million ($35.8m). He will join the first team immediately rather than going back on loan for a year with his parent club.
Other top European clubs, including Real Madrid and Arsenal, were also chasing after Reis’s signature this transfer window. It is Manchester City, however, who won the race.
Reis is a promising young center-back who, although he is already a very talented defender, has a lot of potential to improve. Despite being just 19 years old, he already has a very polished defensive feel and presence.
He positions himself well to intercept passes and quickly shut down counterattacks, and while he is very good at tackling, he prefers to stay on his feet rather than going to the ground. He is also very good in aerial challenges and is a threat on attacking set pieces.
On top of this, Reis is very comfortable on the ball. He is very skilled at hitting long, diagonal passes to open outside backs and wingers, as well as finding other open players further up the field. He is also able to dribble out of pressure if needed. This comfortability he has on the ball is a massive plus for Pep Guardiola who expects his defenders to be part of the attack just as much as he expects them to defend.
With City having an abysmal 2024-24 season, both in the Premier League and the Champions League, Reis will have his opportunity to win his spot at his new club, especially with the defensive woes City has suffered so far this year.
Expect to see big things from this talented young Brazilian!
