Domingo German Had Violent Outburst Prior to Rehab Stint
Earlier this week, New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German was placed on the restricted list to undergo treatment for alcohol abuse. New details have since come to light on the incident that precipitated this decision from German and the team.
Per Lindsey Adler of the Wall Street Journal:
“German appeared intoxicated when he arrived at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday and was soon involved in confrontations with teammates and manager Aaron Boone. He flipped over a couch in the clubhouse, smashed at least one television, and was held for a period of time in the facility’s ‘nap room’ while being monitored by team security.”
The article continues:
“The team, in an effort to get German to contain the situation, briefly sent him into a sauna in an attempt to sweat out the alcohol, according to people who were present.”
German continued to be watched by team security as the Yankees prepared for Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
According to Adler, German was confronted by teammates earlier in the week after playing loud music and cracking jokes as reliever Ron Marinaccio packed his bags to go down to Triple-A.
Domingo German Has Been Here Before
This is not the first time German’s issues with alcohol have gotten him into trouble. Back in 2019, the pitcher was placed on leave after a domestic violence incident in which he slapped his girlfriend. He served an 81-game suspension and did not pitch in the 2020 season.
On June 28, Domingo German pitched the 24th perfect game in MLB history. He concludes his 2023 season with a 5-7 record, 4.56 ERA, and 114 strikeouts over 108.2 innings pitched.
Hopefully the time away does German some good and he gets the help he needs.
