Phillies Return Noah Song To Red Sox
Thanks for being a rat for nothing, Dombrowski! The Philadelphia Phillies have decided that they are no longer willing to carry Noah Song on their 40-man roster. After stealing Song away during the Rule 5 Draft, Philadelphia will return his rights back to Boston. Of course, Song needs to be on the actual MLB roster as a Rule 5 pick. With the Phillies in the middle of a playoff race, it’s not really something that made sense.
WEEI’s Rob Bradford was the first to report the news:
Song, 26, will not need to be placed on Boston’s 40-man roster. The former Navy product was DFA’d by Philly earlier in the week. The only reason why Song made it this far into the season is because the team stashed him on the 60-day IL. When the time ran out and Song proved he was healthy enough to pitch, Philly had to make a decision. A decision that obviously resulted in Song being transferred back to the Red Sox.
At the end of the day, it was a gamble by Philadelphia. Dave Dombrowski made no secret of that when they selected him. The former 4th round pick in 2019 will now work his way through the Boston farm system. Song, of course, was a heralded prospect but had to fulfill his military duty since he attended the Navy. The only thing that’s clear is that Boston needs starting pitching bad. Maybe Song could be an option to join the rotation in 2024 or 25.
