Charles Oliveira will defend his belt against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274

UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira has his next opponent named. Dana White, UFC President, told ESPN that number one contender Justin Gaethje will be the Brazilian champ’s next opponent.

The UFC plan to have the fight take place at UFC 274 which would give the card a second title fight along with the UFC light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira making his first title defense against skilled striker Jiri Prochazka. UFC 274 is scheduled to take place on May 12, 2022 in a location yet to be named but was originally going to be held in Brazil.

This was the fight expected to be made following Oliveira’s first title defense over Dustin Poirier at UFC 269 and Gaethje’s win over Michael Chandler. This fight was not certain as there were rumors about the possibility of Conor McGregor getting the next title shot despite losing his last two fights.

Oliveira first won the belt with a knockout of Chandler in the second round after almost being knocked out himself in the first round. Oliveira currently sits with a record of 32-8 rides a 10 fight win streak going into his next title defense.

This will be the second chance for UFC glory for Gaethje. His first came two fights ago at UFC 254 where he lost by submission to lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired immediately following the fight. Gaethje earned a second shot at the belt with a decision win in the fight of the year against Chandler at UFC 268.
