Will the Giants have a new starting quarterback for the 2022 NFL season? If so, it won’t be Deshaun Watson. Giants owner John Mara recently spoke to the media. While the Watson trade market is expected to heat up again this offseason, New York confirmed they won’t be part of those talks.
We’re not trading for Deshaun Watson,” co-owner John Mara said emphatically.
Why?
“There are so many reasons why we wouldn’t do it,” Mara said. “Cap-wise we couldn’t afford it, but more importantly, with the allegations that are out there right now, that’s just not the right fit for us.”
Interesting phrasing here. If the Giants can’t afford Watson, does that also mean they’re out on Russell Wilson too? Watson has a higher cap number. However, I’m sure Wilson will want some kind of restructure on his contract sooner rather than later. By the sounds of it, New York might be out of the veteran quarterback market altogether.
The Giants are down bad. We know this. The Giants do feel like a bad fit for Watson. I’m not sure their roster is much better than what Houston has. How many draft picks are you willing to part with on an already horrific roster?
Of course, the character concerns play a role. The pending sexual assault case will likely remove a lot of teams from the equation. We just know now that the Giants are one of them. Cross them off the list.
