Cam Ward declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. Except now he won’t be in the upcoming draft class. The former Washington State quarterback did not hire an agent which left the door open for him to change his mind. Changing his mind is exactly what Ward did. Miami has now landed Ward out of the transfer portal.
Ward announced the decision on social media.
Ward, 21, had a damn good year at Washington State in 2023. He was frequently mentioned in the stock report notes. The 6-foot-2, 223-pound quarterback threw for 3,732 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding another eight rushing touchdowns. It’s worth noting that Ward started out at Incarnate Word playing his first two seasons there. He’s come a long way to get his name on the national radar.
It’s also fair to question the timing of this call. Ward likely had his pick between Miami and Florida State. He could have gone to Florida State but they jumped at DJ Uiagalelei once Ward declared for the NFL. Based on Mario Cristobal’s track record with quarterbacks (not a good track record) FSU would have been a much better landing spot. Justin Herbert underperformed with Cristobal at Oregon and Tyler Van Dyke completely forgot how to play once he showed up. I’m not sure this is a grand slam landing spot. Especially committing to a coach that doesn’t understand victory formation (if you know, you know).
Albany’s Reese Poffenbarger committed on Monday. Who knows what this means for his future? Ward will likely get the starting nod. It just screws over Poffenbarger who was otherwise set to start.
