Close the book, wrap it up, Cam Newton is officially unrosterable in the NFL. No NFL team should have him on their roster because he simply isn’t good enough to justify it.
To put it simply, Cam Newton is just bad. He’s terrible inaccurate, he doesn’t use his remaining athletic ability to extend plays as much as he should, and he’s not that dynamic of an athlete anymore. He’s a shell of himself, and he has been since 2018. Newton has been brutalized through injuries, and years ago I claimed that his career lifespan should be looked at like a running back instead of a quarterback because of the sheer number of hits he’s taken. That has aged incredibly well, and his ability has regressed to backup level at best. You might say “well a backup is rosterable,” but there’s something else that really throws Cam into the unrosterable tier, his name.
Cam Newton has this presence about him, if he signs with a team there’s an expectation that he will start. People are attached to the past, and it can get to the point that whenever a start who isn’t solidified as a top guy struggles, the Cam chants will be starting. People hold onto the past, however distant it may be, and they are seemingly unable to separate Cam’s one great MVP year that ended in a Super Bowl defeat. Newton is not even close to the player he once was, but his name carries close to the same value as it did when he was at his peak, at least to the fans.
Sure there are some small things too, Mac Jones helping Cam Newton learn the Patriots playbook during training camp is pretty ridiculous. However, his name value is too great and the expectations are too high for his current ability to play. Cam is unrosterable, it’s official.
