Brandon Moreno Is The Feel Good Story Of 2021

Brandon Moreno may have just given UFC fans the feel-good story of the year. After beating Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 263, Moreno became Mexico’s first-ever UFC champion. After being cut from the UFC in 2018, Moreno came back determined to conquer the flyweight division.

UFC 263

Perfection. That is the only word I can think of to describe Moreno’s performance on Saturday at UFC 263. From his striking to his takedown defense to the picture-perfect rear-naked choke that sealed the deal, his performance was perfect. His striking looked precise, he stayed focused, and he fought like the best flyweight in the world. The sequence that led up to the eventual submission was crazy. After countering a Figueiredo punch with a double-legged, Moreno took down the champion and immediately went to work. His first attempt at the rear-naked almost got it done, but Figueiredo got free. Moreno set up the submission again, and this time sunk it in and got the long-awaited championship he has been chasing since 2017.

After the fight, Moreno was emotional, as you would expect. His post-interview showed just how much the title meant to him and his family. Seeing the pure elation and emotion of a man who has no doubt put his blood, sweat, and tears into the sport was amazing.

What Is Next For Brandon “The Baby Assassin” Moreno?

What is next for the new king of the flyweight division? Whatever he wants. At only 27, Moreno is in a position to run the flyweight division for years to come. I would expect a rematch with Figueiredo to be next up on the schedule for the newly crowned champion, but who knows. I truly believe that Moreno can be the flyweight king for as long as he wants, and I hope he continues to get the recognition and respect he has earned. Figueiredo was the savior of the UFC flyweight division, but Brandon Moreno may bring it to the promised land.

UFC 263 was filled with great moments, but for me, none of them top Brandon Moreno’s life-changing win.
