Steve Yzerman should be thrown in prison for handing out that Ben Chiarot contact. It’s not hyperbole either. The good people of Detroit deserve better than to watch Ben Chiarot play hockey. Anybody who thinks adding Chiarot to their team is a bonehead that can’t be trusted in modern-day society.
Detroit gave Chiarot a four-year contract worth $19 million this offseason. I’m convinced that Yzerman has never seen Chiarot play hockey because that contract should have been viewed as egregious.
Even if you have never seen Chiarot play, you know he’s terrible. The hockey analytics tell the story for a lot of players. In Chiarot’s case, it weeds out the fact that Detroit has decided to pay a defensemen $4.75 AAV for him to suck at everything except hitting people. Worse yet, he CONSTANTLY takes penalties putting your team in four-on-five situations.
Here is the worst part and something that I predicted would happen. Moritz Seider is suffering from a serious sophomore slump. Again, something that was easy to predict. Half of the problem is that it sucks playing with Chiarot as your D-man partner. The numbers here don’t lie and it’s cratering Seider’s production.
Seider, 21, has 12 points in 29 games this season. That was after a 50 point Calder winning season from the year prior. At what point do we acknowledge that what Detroit has done building up a promising young core is CRIMINAL. Chiarot should barely have a job, let alone trying to support a future star like Seider.
For a young team on the rise, burning this type of cap hit on a nothing player was just so stupid. Chiarot causes more harm than good and it’s not just limited to his on ice play. He’s causing damage to the future of this team. Someone needs to give Yzerman a full brain diagnosis because this should have never happened.
