Barclay Goodrow: What Are The Sharks Thinking?

The San Jose Sharks claimed Barclay Goodrow, but none of it makes sense. How does Mike Grier even explain this one? (Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports)

Barclay Goodrow: What Are The Sharks Thinking?

In case you missed it, the Sharks claimed Barclay Goodrow off waivers. Most waiver claims probably aren’t worth having a deep-dive conversation about. This one is and unsurprisingly, it has everything to do with the actions of the worst general manager in the NHL, Mike Grier. It’s been nothing but a comedy of errors in San Jose and this one can be added to the list.

The Rangers were screwed. They were going to buy Goodrow out. They’re desperate to create more cap space and putting Goodrow on waivers was the best way to accomplish that. Goodrow has three years left at a $3,641,666 AAV. A big number for a player who had 12 points in 80 games in a 4th line role. His underlying metrics are all horrifying. Goodrow had a nice playoff run actually but it’s not nearly enough to justify that cap hit.

New York already cut him. They already committed themselves to the idea of buying him out.

NOPE…

Here comes Grier out of nowhere just throwing a lifeline to the Chris Drury led front office. The Sharks claimed Goodrow and took the cap hit right off their hands free of charge.

I just don’t get it. Even if you wanted Goodrow, this is a bad contract and the Rangers had zero leverage. A contract the Rangers probably would have flipped them even a late round draft pick to get rid of. How do they not extract an asset out of that? Worse yet, they then give up a middle round pick for another 4th line player in Ty Dellandrea.

Does any of it make sense? The only thing that’s clear is that every person who roots for the Rangers is celebrating. Is there any other winner here?

It’s hard to figure out what Grier is thinking. He’s totally lost it and even trying to understand a man this stupid is a dangerous game. It remains the biggest joke in the league that a real professional sports franchise put this man in charge. The Sharks will never win as long as Grier is running things.
