While it hurts to lose such a young player, it’s a good move for both sides. Forest gets a potential star who will almost immediately start for Steve Cooper. For United, they get some much-needed funds after their busy start to the summer.
Most recently, the Red Devils signed André Onana from Inter Milan for 50 million euros. The departure of Elanga combined with Alex Telles‘ move to Saudi Arabia means that they have already gotten roughly 20 million pounds back to reinvest.
Erik ten Hag has at least two more targets on his summer shopping list. In particular, Atalanta youngster Rasmus Højlund and Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat are the latest targets for United. Selling Elanga will make those moves more feasible as the weeks go on.
The only question mark behind this transfer is that there’s no sell-on or buyback clause. Elanga broke into the team during their chaotic 2021-2022 season. His debut and development were one of the only bright spots in one of the worst years of their history.
Should he develop nicely at the City Ground, it’s a fool’s errand to not have something that could capitalize on his value. The fee itself is a pretty fair one, but extra add-ons are a must for United.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Anthony Elanga is moving away from Manchester United. The Swedish forward will continue his time in the Premier League at Nottingham Forest.
