Ali Wong: Single Lady Netflix Review

Before I begin, I just want to clarify a few things. I’ve always been a fan of Ali Wong. Here is proof. I think she’s a good comic and root for her to succeed.

With that said, I don’t think I can even bury the lead with this one. This stand up was trash and I can’t possibly recommend it. I get where she was trying to go with this Single Lady set but it’s horrible in every single aspect.

As always with the reviews I do for the site, I try my best to limit the spoilers. Feel free to still support Ali and her career. I’m a fan and maybe you should still watch anyway for that reason. I’m just going to lay out a few takeaways I had that need to be talked about.

A: If I had to compare this stand up to anything, it was like watching a bad Taylor Swift song on repeat for an hour straight. I’m not exactly the biggest Taylor Swift cheerleader but I also have no problem admitting some of her songs are bangers. Other songs maybe not so much.

This stand up was like listening to one of those bad Taylor Swift songs where she complains about an ex-lover over and over again. We get it. You got divorced and had some fun. I’m just not sure how any of it was funny in the same way that you felt weird listening to T Swift bash an ex during a song.

She just sounds totally delusional during the stand up. There’s one part where she describes breaking it off with a new fling post divorce. She broke things off after three weeks because the guy didn’t offer to much on her box on that random Tuesday afternoon. The guy then asked why she didn’t communicate that and she threw a hissy fit claiming that communication was a married person thing.

No. Sorry but no. That’s an absolute lunatic move. We can achieve great things with communication. It’s a basic skill kids in Kindergarten are asked to do. If a grown adult can’t do the same, maybe she should look at herself in the mirror. Also, if your marriage fails, maybe don’t pretend like you have it all figured out in terms of dating.

B: Again, I’m rooting for Ali but she sounds totally delusional and I didn’t laugh one single time during the first 30 minutes. I turned it off after because it was totally unbearable to watch. She also complained about dating an older dude because he repeated a story too many times. Are we supposed to feel bad for you that you made poor life choices?

I can’t stress enough that I’m an Ali Wong fan. I wanted to like the stand up. I just didn’t laugh once. Like to the point where I didn’t crack a smile and was bored. The last time she did a stand up, she basically was begging to cheat on her husband. Then got a divorce shortly after. Now she’s complaining about the dates as a divorced woman. Who wants to be the one who goes out with the girl who airs all the dirt laundry?

There was also no secondary pitch. It was a fastball down the middle on every single joke. No curveballs. Everything having to do with post divorce life in the least funny way possible.

Life is about expectations. Maybe my expectations for Ali Wong were simply too high. Maybe I should recognize that her time as a queen of stand up has passed. Britney Spears had Charli XCX write her songs when she lost popularity. Maybe Ali should do the same with Andrea Jin and pass the torch because she is amazing.

Feel free to comment because I’d love to hear if someone actually liked this stand up.
