Alex DeBrincat Traded To Ottawa Senators For Draft Picks

The Blackhawks teardown is officially here. Chicago’s best player Alex DeBrincat has been traded to the Ottawa Senators for three draft picks. One of which includes the 7th overall selection in the 2022 NHL Draft tonight.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff was the first to report the news:

Ottawa may be sending three picks but you could argue this return is light for the kind of player DeBrincat is. The 24-year-old winger is coming off a 78 point season that included 41 goals. Keep in mind Chicago isn’t exactly oozing with talent outside of Patrick Kane. Of course, Kane is great but the rest of this roster is about as bad as it gets across the league.

Earlier in the year, I wrote a post about how I would have moved mountains to acquire DeBrincat. Time will tell how this acquisition goes but make no mistake about it, this is an elite sniper. The concerns about his size coming into the 2017 NHL Draft proved to be foolish. It’s not the size of the dog. It’s the size of the fight in the dog. The shot DeBrincat has is a total banger.

The Blackhawks better nail this number seven pick or this trade is going to go down as a bad one for Chicago. It’s fair to question their decision making at the start of the rebuild. Nobody is saying Dylan Strome is a world beater but there is every reason to believe he can become a more than capable third line center for a good team. To rescind his qualifying offer while you’re in rebuild mode is baffling.
