Aaron Glenn is the latest face in what could be a mass exodus of the Detroit Lions coaching staff. He will return to the New York Jets as head coach, the team that drafted him 12th overall in the 1994 NFL Draft. After former OC Ben Johnson left for the Chicago Bears days ago, the DC will also depart. Ian Rappoport was one of many to recently confirm the news:
In recent years, Glenn established himself as one of the top coordinators vying for a future head coaching role. Even with star players and key contributors dropping like flies, the Lions still finished 7th in points against per game in 2024. With buzz surrounding the move as early as last night into this morning, the deal is now done. Obviously, having a past relationship helps as Glenn played corner for his first eight seasons as a Jet, earning two Pro Bowl selections. As of now, he will begin constructing his staff and taking a better look into what this team will look like for next season.
It is still hilarious that the 33rd Team ran the show for the Jets in their personnel search. However, this might not be a complete swing and miss. While he is walking into a mess, there are some solid pieces on the defense already. Not to mention that Lions players absolutely love this guy. He is a leader of men and you can bet that he’s fired up to have a new opportunity to lead a franchise.
Now it’s just a matter of now figuring out the offense. 2024 showed the whole world that Aaron Rodgers wasn’t the answer for this team. As well, their offensive line needs a ton of help. Which makes this search for a general manager even more crucial. Washington assistant GM Lance Newmark is reportedly on their radar. If Woody Johnson and his son can stay out of it and let smart people make smart decisions (unlikely), then maybe 2025 won’t be as bad as everyone thinks
Dan Campbell is going to have his work cut out for him this offseason. After having back-to-back prime opportunities to make a run to the Super Bowl, but of the coordinators behind their recent success are out of the door. Oh, and could they already have buyer’s remorse on that mega deal for Jared Goff? Jahmyr Gibbs is due for a big payday in the near future. Maybe if pieces like Aidan Hutchinson and others didn’t go down during the season we are having a completely different conversation. I’m ripping a page out of Trey’s book and referencing the Chinese Farmer on this one.
Aaron Glenn was long overdue for a shot as an NFL head coach. Now, it’s gonna be a homecoming of sorts as the Texas native will once again wear green for the Jets.
