I Blame Zac Taylor Why I Was Wrong About Joe Mixon In Fantasy Football

If you watched the 2024 iteration of the Matthew Berry challenge, you know exactly what I’m talking about. If you haven’t watched it, I encourage you to do so. The link for that can be found here. It’s worth your time, I promise you that. Anywho, I just want to go on a quick rant about Zac Taylor and Joe Mixon.

For the most part, Mixon had a really good season. He killed you in the fantasy playoffs but he mostly was a positive asset during the season. The former Oklahoma product rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns while missing three games. He also was a factor in the passing game adding 309 receiving yards and a score through the air. His 4.7 yards per scrimmage mark was his best season since 2018. He looked like a way better player than when he was with the Bengals.

I think it’s important to reflect on the season because how will you learn otherwise? If we learned anything, it’s that the Zac Taylor offense will never work. His teams just aren’t tough and it shows. Mixon, behind a below-average offensive line in Houston, looked miles better at an advanced age compared to when he was in Cincinnati.

By the way, look at the running back who had success for the Bengals. It was Chase Brown. A nickel runner who can catch the ball. That’s the Zac Taylor. Constantly in shotgun. Constantly in three wide receiver looks. Constantly drawing up long third down pass plays on every single down.

If we learned anything from this year, if the lead running back in Cincinnati can’t catch, don’t draft him. Whoever their power back is, don’t draft him. This Zac Taylor offense is too soft to successfully run the ball.

Mixon, 28, may have another productive season in him as long as Houston is smart enough to start drafting some offensive lineman. He clearly proved that the Bengals were part of the reason why his YPC totals were never high. I’m still not sure I’d trust him for fantasy playoff weeks with the way these older backs wear down but Mixon deserves his flowers the way he performed in Houston.

As long as Zac Taylor remains in charge, be very careful investing in running backs who don’t catch in fantasy. That’s a lesson to be learned.
