Buffalo Bills
Will Josh Allen make the leap in year two? Check out the Buffalo Bills 2019 NFL Training Camp Season Preview #BillsMafia (Timothy T Ludwig/USA TODAY)

The Buffalo Bills are a team that is on the rise. I guess I should say should be on the rise. It’s a big year for Josh Allen. It’s a big year for Sean McDermott. It’s a big year for Frank Gore! With NFL training camps set to open, it’s time to preview each team heading into the 2019-2020 NFL season. Here we go. What should we expect from the Bills heading into the upcoming season?

3 Position Battles To Watch:

Running Back: LeSean McCoy, Frank Gore, Devin Singletary, and TJ Yeldon

The Bills have a lot of running backs. Not a lot of great options. LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore are both old. Somehow McCoy has fallen off a cliff more than Gore has. Yeldon might benefit from a change of scenery and had his moments in Jacksonville. Devin Singletary comes in as a third round pick from Florida Atlantic. I didn’t love Singletary out of college but he has a pathway to get a hefty chunk of touches. Which guy will emerge as the guy? I don’t think anyone has that answer yet.

Wide Receiver: John Brown, Zay Jones, Cole Beasley, Robert Foster, David Sills, Andre Roberts, Ray-Ray McCloud

The Bills signed Cole Beasley and John Brown to spark some life in this Bills offense. Boy, do they need it. Zay Jones has largely been a bust thus far as a former 2nd round pick. I think he has more in him. Robert Foster really caught fire at the end of the year and could be a real impact guy. Over the last 3 weeks of the season, Foster reeled in 180 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Bills may have something here. This comes down to Beasley and Brown. Beasley needs to be a productive slot receiver for this team. Josh Allen has the arm strength. John Brown needs to get open deep down the field. For the record, I think he can.

Tight End: Dawson Knox, Tommy Sweeney, Lee Smith, Jason Croom, Tyler Kroft

I hope you noticed a trend. Get Josh Allen some help. Year 2 is the make or break year a lot of times for a young quarterback. Tyler Kroft comes to town via free agency from Cincinnati. He did a decent job filling in Tyler Eifert. Kroft feels like the veteran stop gap until the rookies are ready. Tommy Sweeney fits this offense well as a blocking tight end. Dawson Knox is a boom or bust pick from Ole Miss. Limited college production by incredible pure tools.

Ready To Breakout: Levi Wallace

The Buffalo Bills did something really smart last year that flew under the radar. Buffalo essentially took the F*ck it approach and just kept signing undrafted guys from Alabama. Hell, they played at Alabama so they must be good? It actually worked out believe it or not. Buffalo found a gem receiver with Robert Foster. Quietly, they also did so at cornerback with Levi Wallace. Get ready for this. Pro Football Focus graded out Wallace as the 4th best cornerback in the NFL in 2018. Wallace wasn’t a high recruit either at Alabama. Wallace isn’t fast or super long or very athletically gifted. He’s just a good football player. If Wallace continues to grow, this could be one of the best cornerback duos in the league with Tre’Davious White.

Rookie To Watch: Ed Oliver

How can it be anybody else except Ed Oliver? The former University of Houston defensive tackle was the number one high school recruit in the country 3 years ago. He’s the biggest athletic freak at the position since Aaron Donald. All of my eyeballs are on this guy.

Fantasy Sleeper: Josh Allen

Josh Allen actually has a lot of fantasy value in 2019. I anticipate him taking a jump with his passing. However, his legs actually made him very valuable from a fantasy perspective. In 11 starts as a rookie, Allen rushed for 631 yards and 8 touchdowns. That’s incredible value. If Allen were to find a way to throw 30 touchdowns while keeping that sort of rushing prowess, Allen is quietly a fantasy superstar. Maybe that’s wishful thinking but that’s the ceiling.
