Brodie Van Wagenen Thinks The Mets Are The Favorites In The NL East

Brodie Van Wagenen is the new general manager of the New York Mets and he’s not messing around. Since taking over the reigns this year, BVW has acquired Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz, Jeurys Familia, and Wilson Ramos. The former agent turned gm is uber agressive and he also is talking shit along the way.

In a recent interview with SNY following the Wilson Ramos press conference, Van Wagenen was asked about the current state of the Mets. He was not shy about his opinion:

First, I’ll say that I love what he’s doing. Too many general managers in baseball are scared to trade prospects. They don’t even watch the games anymore. It’s all stat driven and execs are terrified to make risky moves. Van Wagenen couldn’t give a rip. He’s trying to win. Screw prospects. This guy is shooting for the moon and you have to respect it.

On the other hand, I don’t love the moves BVW has made. I’m all for trading prospects. You can’t hoard all of them. However, trading away the 6th pick in the draft plus another former first-round pick to eat almost all of Robinson Cano’s contract just to add a closer doesn’t seem smart. Do you really want back in on the Familia business after he blew multiple playoff games in the past? I also love my catchers that can’t hit a lick but control the locker room like David Ross and Jason Varitek. I would have been all in on Martin Maldonado but that’s just me.

Can the Mets win the NL East? Hell yeah they can. The starting pitching is elite if healthy. The Mets just need more offense. You can start to see that with the additions of Cano and Ramos. Peter Alonso is also a big time X-Factor. Hell, even Jeff McNeil has something to him. I hate watching National League baseball but between the Mets, Phillies, Braves, and Nationals, the division is wide open.
