Ravens sign Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year deal

Ravens sign Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year deal

While the future of Lamar Jackson in Baltimore may still be a murky one. The Ravens finally get some legit receiver help for Lamar by bringing in Odell Beckham Jr. It’s a one-year deal worth up to $18 million. Tom Pelissero was among the first to break the news.

Again, Lamar’s future in Baltimore is still a very uncertain one. The nonexclusive franchise tag was placed on him back in early March, which gives other teams the chance to negotiate with Lamar but also can net the Ravens 2 first-round picks if they decide not a match a potential deal. Lamar has also expressed a desire to leave Baltimore. And overall it just seems more likely that Lamar will soon be playing somewhere else.

Is it enough to keep Lamar Jackson?

The question now becomes, is this enough to keep Lamar in Baltimore? Beckham at age 30 is well past the prime we saw in New York. But he has shown that he can still be a lethal weapon in the right offense and provide some value.

And for a Raven’s receiver room who saw Demarcus Robinson lead with 458 yards. It’s clear that Odell Beckham even at his age would be a huge upgrade for this Ravens team. I think it’s going to take more than this though for the Ravens to keep Lamar.

I think at this point the writing is on the wall for Lamar to leave Baltimore. The relationship seems to be strained at this point and I find it very unlikely that a long-term deal is agreed on. But it seems like the front office wants to try and get the most they can out of this potential last season by finally trying to get him some weapons.

Now a lot more is still needed I’m sure to even think about changing Lamar’s mind. While Beckham is certainly an upgrade, it’s mostly because this Ravens reciever core is one of the worst in the league. And Odell Beckham is far past the point of being able to carry a receiving core like he once did.

Maybe they try and use that first-round pick to bring in a true weapon. Although we’ve seen how that’s gone before for Baltimore. Or maybe they try and sign someone else on the market or even try and make a trade.

Because as it stands right now, I very much doubt Lamar ends up signing a long terms deal with the Ravens. Not unless they really show something to him in this last season. Time is ticking and we soon will see truly what direction each side wants to go.
