Pete Carroll is one of the best coaches in NFL history, and he’s going to be staying around for a bit longer.
Heading into their week 9 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, the Seahawks have given head coach Pete Carroll a multi-year extension. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal will tie up Carroll with the Seahawks until at least the 2025 season.
Carroll who is already the oldest coach in the NFL, at the age of 69 (Not considering Romeo Crennel until he becomes fully signed). If he does indeed last until the 2025 season, Carroll should be 74 years old when he has a chance to retire. This would break George Halas’ record as the oldest coach in NFL history by two years.
He began his coaching career at the University of Pacific in 1973, and is now the winningest head coach in Seahawks’ franchise history. His total record for the Hawks is 106-60-1.
He made the jump to the NFL in 1984 as a defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills. Ten years later he began his first head coaching job in the NFL, for the New York Jets. But was later named the coach of the New England Patriots in 1997, only to be replaced by Bill Belicheck. Carroll had returned to the College ranks in 2001, where he led the Univerity of Southern California to two national championships and made the Trojans a five-time Pac-10 champion. Basically, putting USC on the map.
In 2011, Carroll became the eighth head coach in Seahawks history. It only took two years with him at the helm for the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl in 2013. They have also never registered a losing season with Carroll taking the charge. This season Carroll, Russell Wilson, and the crew have the Seahawks in position to win another Super Bowl. They have a record of 6-1 after eight weeks and are first in the NFC.
How does this affect the future of both sides?
As said above the Seahawks have a record of 106-60-1 with Carroll. Which is an average of 11 wins a year. With Carroll being the only head coach a few of the players know, especially Bobby Wagner and Wilson, this move provides consistency on both sides of the ball.
If the Hawks can continue playing the way they have for the past decade, it could give Carroll a record of 161-89-2. Which could put him in the top 20 best coaches in NFL History. If extended for another 5 years after 2025, he could have a chance to get within the top 15, and maybe even top 10.
Will Pete Carroll make the Hall of Fame?
The question has yet to be determined, but there is a good chance he does because he is the oldest coach in the NFL (not considering interim head coach of the Houston Texans Romeo Crennel).
But, with five more years Carroll can make his case.
