Devin Leary 2024 NFL Draft Profile

What should NFL fans make of Devin Leary as he makes the jump to the next level? Let’s talk about it and not waste any unnecessary time. Here is your 2024 NFL Draft Profile on Kentucky signal caller, Devin Leary.

Let’s start with the obvious. Kentucky was worse with Leary than it was with Will Levis. I viewed Levis as a project when he was drafted last year. Felt that even a second round pick was too high (which is proving to be the case thus far). The Wildcats went 7-6 in 2023 and 2022 but had that 10-3 season with Levis in 2021. Leary was never going to flash that high end skill to make Kentucky a real player in the SEC.

The raw numbers for Leary are not good. The New Jersey native had this weird outlier season in 2021 with NC State when he posted a 35-5 TD to INT ratio. You can interpret that however you want but I’m just telling you that’s a total fluke. It’s not who he is. This past year with Kentucky while playing in a real conference, Leary completed 56.3% of his throws as a 5th year senior. If that’s not a red flag, I think you need your eyes checked.

I’ve been out on Leary for a long time. Think he sucks and hate watching him. Feel that way pretty much every time I turn on one of his games. His supporters will try to tell you he’s a gamer but it’s really just a way to hide the fact that he’s not that talented. He’s been mentioned frequently during the Stock Report series while he was with NC State and Kentucky. His game against East Carolina while with NC State was putrid. Against real competition against Georgia this year he looked like a lost puppy that never had a prayer.

Leary wasn’t deemed good enough to receive a Senior Bowl invite (and it was the right call). However, we did see him at the East-West Game. He did what he normally does. Finds a way to suck and look out of place showing no indication that he’s a real quarterback. He just has no ability to deliver the ball consistently from the pocket. Mechanically he’s incredibly flawed. We saw those deficiencies at the Combine.

There is no real ceiling to get excited about either. It’s not like Leary sucks but there is hope for a better future. He checks in at 6-foot-1, 215 with an average arm. The pure accuracy stinks and he can’t really do anything unless it’s a scramble situation by rolling outside of the pocket. Way too stiff in the lower half and an all-arm thrower. Former three star guy. Hey, at least he has New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year in 2016 going for him.

Devin Leary should not be drafted. Any team that wastes a pick on him, I will have a chuckle to myself on draft day. I think he’s a waste of time and another clone of a bad Mitch Trubisky impression except with more collegiate starts. I’m out here.
