Luke McCaffrey 2024 NFL Draft Profile

There is another CMC entering the NFL ranks. Luke McCaffrey is the topic today as we continue the run on wide receivers for the 2024 NFL Draft profile series. Let’s have a chat about everything you need to know about the wide out from Rice.

For starters, Luke is much skinnier than his brother Christian, who stars as a running back for the 49ers. Luke has a background as a quarterback and has since converted into a slot receiver. Started out his career at Nebraska and really only started to give up the QB stuff the last two years. Has some really efficient stats as a runner too. Former three star guy but that was while being recruited for QB.

Might not be as thick as Christian but has good height on him checking in at 6-foot-2, 198. The numbers are there the last two years as a pure wide receiver. 2022 he reeled in 58 receptions for 723 yards and six touchdowns. This past year, CMC Lite notched 71 receptions for 992 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s actually a tick faster than his older brother clocking in at a 4.46. Decent leaping numbers too. You would think he still has room to grow considering he only has been playing the position full time for two years.

I love what I saw at the Senior Bowl. Has real speed and it kinda looks like CMC running those slot routes. Hands are pretty good too. I’ve seen him make his fair share of one handers. He’s tough too. Not scared to go over the middle. If anything, the NFL bloodlines are more translateable with father Ed being a receiver for the Broncos for many years. Positive showing at the Combine too. Good play speed and knows how to get open / run routes.

I like the fact that he’s fearless as a runner in the open field. Doesn’t resemble a quarterback that way. Really good acceleration and he wants to break tackles. Not looking to go down right away. Not going to help you in the blocking game but can help you in the return game.

I’m in here. I’d start sniffing around on Luke McCaffrey in the 4th or 5th round range. I need a slot guy with speed who can catch the ball and be tough over the middle, this is your guy. I like his odds despite the weird circuitous route to the NFL.
