The best acquisition at the 2023 NFL Draft was Chase Young and I’m not sure it’s arguable. The 49ers acquired the former Ohio State product for a third round pick.
Don’t get me wrong, part of this is on the Commanders. What a dumb idiotic franchise. I knew that Young could be had. I can promise you I’m winning the bidding war if I’m in the league.
What people need to understand is that Washington really had no leverage here. They’re the ones that declined Young’s 5th-year option. Nobody who is actually intelligent would ever make that mistake. Especially when you consider that Washington picked Young with the second pick in the draft and he’s actually a really good player. Washington got what they could. San Francisco was the team that just wisely pounced.
Putting the dysfunction in Washington aside, this deal should be considered a home run for San Francisco. I love the fact that the 49ers added another stud on a defensive line that was already elite. Imagine what’s going to happen now that Young can run free given that Nick Bosa is on the other side…
That part doesn’t even tell the whole story. It’s the small details of the trade that makes this fascinating.
If you’re not getting it, let me spell it out for you as simply as I can. The 49ers just got Chase Young because one of San Francisco’s assistants who got hired away happens to be black. That’s the “pick” they gave up. If the 49ers lose Young in free agency, they get that exact pick right back the following year. That’s a real rule in the NFL. I’m not going to say anything beyond that. I’ll leave the rest of that part up to you in the comments section.
