Commanders trade Chase Young to 49ers for third-round pick

The San Franciso 49ers have made a splash at the NFL Trade Deadline with the acquisition of Washington Commanders edge rusher Chase Young, according to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo. The Commanders will gain a third-round pick as compensation.

Young was the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Ohio State product was a sensational prospect. In the NFL, Young has struggled to stay healthy. Thus far into his career, his rookie campaign was the only year he played in more than ten games. That was a highly productive year as he logged 7.5 sacks and won AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.

In 2023, Young played seven of the Commanders’ eight games. In that time, he returned to top form with five sacks and nine quarterback hits.

The Commanders are shipping off its most valuable talent after a 3-5 start. The team moved off fellow edge rusher Montez Sweat earlier during deadline day.

The addition of Young provides the 49ers with another high-impact defensive player. Young will start on the opposite side of Nick Bosa and create one of the best edge rushing duos in the NFL. The defensive line features Arik Armstead and Javon Hargrave on the interior as well. An elite 49ers defense got even better at the cost of a third-round pick.

The 5-3 49ers are preparing for another deep playoff run. The defense will make them a tough out once the playoffs begin.

The Commanders declined Young’s fifth-year option which makes him a free agent this offseason. In that regard, Young may end up being a one-year rental as they chase a ring. Although, if they fail to extend Young in the offseason, they will likely gain a compensation pick that prevents a drastic loss in draft capital.
