Cris Collinsworth: Daniel Jones ‘Plays’ Like Patrick Mahomes

At first glance, you may be confused. Yes, Cris Collinsworth did go on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd and said Daniel Jones plays like two-time MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes. However, don’t rush to conclusions just yet.

Collinsworth was asked by Cowherd on what he thinks about the upcoming New York Giants season. Collinsworth explained that he and Al Michaels are calling their season-opening broadcast against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, and due to that, he has been watching tons of film on Daniel Jones, wanting to see what makes the Duke product “tick.”

“I would say that [Jones] is, and boy, people are going to scream when they hear this, but he plays the game a little like Patrick Mahomes,” Collinsworth said, according to the New York Post. “When you watch him play, it’s not the first read that he [Jones] beats you on. He’s somebody that wants to pull the ball down if it’s not there immediately. He’s pretty good at maneuvering around and finding an open hole.

“He only runs a 4.8 (40-yard dash). I actually went back yesterday when I was watching the tape. Is he fast? How is he getting away from these defensive linemen and EDGE players? He’s a 4.8 kind of guy. Patrick Mahomes is about the same thing, and Joe Burrow is probably about the same thing.”

Jones may run a 4.8, but he has an uncanny ability to evade pressure within the pocket and accelerate to sneaky fast game speeds. If that sounds familiar it is, Mahomes is one of the best in the world at doing just that.

Can Daniel Jones Take The Leap Forward?

Daniel Jones had his best season last year under Brian Daboll. He posted career-bests in passing yards (3,205), completion percentage (67.2) and interceptions (5). He also demolished his highest career rushing total with 708 yards and added seven touchdowns on the ground to go along with that.

The hope for Jones is to take that leap forward into the upper-echelon of quarterbacks that getting paid this offseason; the Giants gave Jones a 4-year, $160 million deal.

His success will come down to the weapons the Giants surround him with, and luckily the team has added some. Recently, the Giants acquired former Raiders’ tight end Darren Waller and re-signed Saquon Barkley to a one-year deal.

Waller has proved that he is a matchup nightmare, and Jones has been loving throwing to his versatile tight end so far in camp. I’m not saying that Daniel Jones is elite, but Daboll has a good track record of turning athletic, turnover-prone quarterbacks into stars.

What do you make of Collinsworth’s statement? How will Daniel Dimes perform this year? Drop your predictions below!
