2025 Winter Transfer Window Deadline Day Recap

Today was one of my favorite holidays of the year. You might be thinking, what possible holiday could he be talking about in the beginning of February besides Groundhog Day? The answer, if you for some reason did not read the title, is that it was deadline day!

Specifically, it was the deadline day for the 2025 winter transfer window, and with deadline day comes nothing short of excitement and despair for footballing fans around the world who are hoping their clubs could make some final signings to give them a boost heading into the second half of the season.

With so much happening on deadline day, we are going to give you a quick recap of the biggest moves that happened. I will be posting a complete 2025 winter transfer window recap in the coming days, meaning that today we will be focusing exclusively on transfer moves that happened on Feb. 3. Keep your eyes out for the complete 2025 winter transfer window recap if you are looking for transfer moves that happened earlier in the window.

Without further ado, let’s hop into it!

Nico González To Manchester City

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City splashed the cash during this transfer window as they looked to turn around an incredibly disappointing season so far, and part of that splashing came with the purchase of Spanish midfielder Nico González. City dished out £49.88 million ($62m) to sign the 23-year-old, which was more expensive than the €40 million they were hoping to get González for. Nevertheless, the former Barcelona player is very talented and will be able to play an immediate role in City’s midfield.

Santiago Giménez To AC Milan

Despite being an avid U.S. fan, even I cannot deny Santiago Giménez‘s goal-scoring ability. This is why AC Milan paid €35 million ($35.8m) to sign the Mexican striker from Dutch side Feyenoord. For a Milan team that has struggled with putting the ball in the back of the net, Giménez’s signing is definitely exciting. And, if you are a CONCACAF junkie like I am, he will now be joining the U.S.’s Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah in Milan, giving Milan an even more exciting dynamic for neutral fans such as myself.

Stefanos Tzimas To Brighton

Brighton’s scouting department is at it again! This time, they have signed 19-year-old Greek striker Stefanos Tzimas from Bundesliga 2 side FC Nürnberg for £20 million ($24.6m). While he is definitely one to watch for more in the future than the present, he has shown his goal-scoring prowess already, netting 10 times in 13 Bundesliga 2 starts. He looks to have a knack for scoring when given the chance, and if he continues to develop at Brighton, he could turn out to be a stud up top.

Marco Asensio On Loan To Aston Villa

If you had to ask me what the theme of the day was, I would be able to give you a simple, one-word answer: LOANS. One of the biggest loan moves was Marco Asensio joining Aston Villa on loan from PSG. After joining PSG in the summer of 2023 from Real Madrid, Asensio is back on the move again and will join Villa through this June. This provides Asensio with the opportunity to get the playing time he was lacking at PSG and for Villa to have another dangerous attacking option added to the squad as they get ready to compete in the knockout stages of the Champions League and look to finish in the top four yet again.

Axel Disasi On Loan To Aston Villa

Asensio was not the only man to move on loan to Aston Villa for the remainder of the season. Chelsea center-back Axel Disasi will join him at Villa Park for the remainder of the season as he looks to get his career back on track after a disappointing start to his Chelsea career. After joining the Blues in the summer of 2023, he has yet to truly find his footing in the Premier League. He’s got the potential, and now that he is moving to a good team in Aston Villa that needs some extra support in their back line, he will have every opportunity to turn things around. It is also important to note that Marcus Rashford also joined Aston Villa on loan from Manchester United, but since this move technically happened one day before deadline day, I am not going to go into further detail on his move.

Ben Chilwell On Loan To Crystal Palace

Ben Chilwell‘s career has stalled recently due to injuries. In fact, he has not started a competitive match in around 10 months. Now that he has fallen out of the pecking order at Chelsea, this loan move for the rest of the season to Crystal Palace is the perfect opportunity for him to get things back on track. We have all seen his quality on the field, and if he can refind his form at a decent Crystal Palace side, expect to see Chilwell get a permanent move this summer.

Mathys Tel On Loan To Tottenham

Tottenham needs all of the help it can get right now, and while a defensive signing would have been nice, bringing Mathys Tel on loan for the remainder of the season from Bayern is still a great deal for the struggling Spurs. Tel will bring additional depth to Tottenham’s front line as Ange Postecoglou’s side looks to turn around a disastrous Premier League campaign so far. This move also allows Tel to continue his development and for the 19-year-old to return to Bayern and compete for more playing time next season. It is worth noting that Tottenham does have a purchase option at the end of Tel’s loan as well.

Other Transfers Of Note

Beyond the few transfers that I went more in-depth on above, there were also other transfers that are worth taking note of on deadline day. In terms of permanent transfers, Anthony Rouault joined Rennes from Stuttgart, Davide Calabria moved from AC Milan to Bologna, Lloyd Kelly joined Juventus on loan from Newcastle with an obligation to buy, Michy Batshuayi moved to Eintracht Frankfurt from Galatasaray, Anastasios Douvikas transferred to Como from Celta Vigo, Warren Bondo joined AC Milan from Monza, Eli Junior Kroupi moved Bournemouth from Lorient, Nicolò Fagioli joined Fiorentina on loan with an obligation to buy from AC Milan, Cucho Fernández made the leap across, joining Real Betis from the Columbus Crew, Nasser Djiga joined Wolves from Red Star Belgrade and Marshall Munetsi joined Wolves from Reims.

In terms of loan moves with the option to buy, Carlos Alcaraz moved to Everton from Flamengo, Riccardo Sottil joined AC Milan from Fiorentina, Lucas Gourna-Douath joined Roma from Red Bull Salzburg and Ismaël Bennacer moved to Marseille from AC Milan.

In terms of straight loan moves, Jeffrey Schlupp moved to Celtic from Crystal Palace, Noah Okafor joined Napoli from AC Milan, Adam Aznou moved to Real Valladolid from Bayern, Kelechi Iheanacho joined Middlesbrough from Sevilla, Carney Chukwuemeka joined Borussia Dortmund from Chelsea, Evan Ferguson joined West Ham from Brighton, Stefan Posch joined Atalanta from Bologna, Daniel Svensson moved to Borussia Dortmund from Nordsjælland and André Silva moved to Werder Bremen from RB Leipzig.

In terms of American transfers, Jordan Pefok moved to Reims from Union Berlin for $4.7 million while Caleb Wiley moved on loan to Watford from Chelsea on deadline day.

It is also worth noting that James Ward-Prowse‘s loan move from West Ham to Nottingham Forest has been ended, and he will now finish the season with West Ham.
