The National team lost the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl 22-19 in what was an incredibly entertaining game. Before I jump into the game notes, one last reminder that we have the tape practice footage this year so more in-depth content will be on the way. This post is more of a flash takeaway post that caught my attention watching it live. Hope you guys have enjoyed the draft coverage this year as VSM strives to take our stuff to another level year after year. Without further ado, here are your National Team game notes from the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl!
Quarterbacks:
Dillon Gabriel gets the start. The lack of height was already noticeable. Had an ugly deflected ball at the start of the game. He looked incredibly shaky. Just felt like he was overwhelmed. Pure arm talent isn’t anything special. 4/6 for 28 yards. Longest one was for 10 yards. Couldn’t push the ball down the field at all. I was underwhelmed during the week of practices and that carried over into the game. I can’t imagine you’re using a premium draft pick here. Has a shot to be a quality backup but you can’t pay an arm and a leg to find that out.
Tyler Shough takes over in the second quarter. Threw an ugly pick where he stared at his target the whole time on a throw that wasn’t close intended for Fannin. Late on the throw and not accurate. 9/13 for 62 yards and one touchdown/interception each.
I actually think he was the best quarterback at the event minus the one horrible pick. He’s worth investigating further. Even if it only nets you more juiced up Davis Mills. I think that’s what you’re looking at.
Canada may have had the best throw in the game to Pat Bryant for a big gain. He’s definitely not going to have mobility on his side. Couldn’t out run Georgia. Think we saw enough during the week of practices to know nothing is here but he wasn’t horrible in the game.
Running Backs:
Ollie Gordon gets the first carry. Trick play pass for the score to Higgins. Otherwise, I don’t think he looked great. Nine carries for 33 yards. Caught one pass that went nowhere. For as big as he is, it never looks like he’s hard to tackle. Sure, a lot went wrong at Oklahoma State but there was never a time this week that made you think he’s going to be a star.
Woody Marks made a nice play in the screen game. He’s not anything special though. Lacked spacial awareness on one target where he was literally standing out of bounds. Five carries for seven yards and went nowhere in the run game.
LeQuint Allen may have looked the best just moving around but it wasn’t by much. Four carries for 10 yards and one catch. Wasn’t involved until late. Looks like he can be a factor in the passing game but I wouldn’t say he’s a freak show.
Wide Receivers:
Good game for Jayden Higgins. Caught a nice contested catch against Mac McWilliams That’s what Higgins does and he converted this one. Jalyn Noel with a bad drop near the sideline on a ball by Shough. After watching, I think Higgins is the Iowa State guy I’d rather pick. Noel had three targets and didn’t have a single catch. Higgins went for 41 yards on two grabs.
Tight Ends:
Elijah Arroyo smurfed a guy on a two pointer. Dude won the week.
Harold Fannin had a really nice game. Chewed up the middle of the field. Four receptions for 25 yards on five targets. The one target he didn’t catch was the off target interception I mentioned previously. I see some shades of Isaiah Likely. He’s going to help someone. It’s a matter of just how good he really is.
Offensive Line:
Josh Conerly gets the start at left tackle. Love this player. Saw maybe one bad rep in the game but otherwise was on it again. Not telling you he’s a Hall of Famer but he can very much play.
Grey Zabel out here making plays already. First two plays of the game, they ran right into his direction and picked up good yardage. Played center in the 4th. Looked good wherever he was at. Fantastic during the week of practice. He looks better than even Cody Mauch did when he was here.
Defensive Line:
Darius Alexander already making plays at the start of the game. Making TFLs in the run game. Has a burst and getting into the backfield. I think it’s time to take him seriously.
Landon Jackson made a really nice TFL in the run game beating Anthony Belton to get to the RB. Hlped cause pressure resulting in the Tafuna sack too. Tafuna beats Jacob Webb for the sack on Leonard. Same thing happened when Dart took over. Created the pressure where Tafuna cleaned up the sack. Jackson was very noticeable during his time on the field. Made Alabama A&M guy look like a little girl. Had a strip sack against Dart. Dude was a menace and the best part is he got better and better each day throughout the week.
Ty Robinson winning his matchup against Webb of Jacksonville State. Was a big time problem and factor stopping the run. It won’t show up in the box score but he’s legit.
Oluwafemi Oladejo goes right by Dipree for a sack on Milroe. Didn’t chip him at all. Picks up another sack on Milroe. Beat Alabama A&M for it who can’t block anybody. There’s an edge and motor to him. Had two sacks and two TFLs. Looks like he has explosion on his side. Used to be a linebacker with no much experience rushing. Imagine if he gets two notches better? Might have something here.
Linebackers:
I don’t know what the Oregon linebacker is doing but Jeffery Bassa had a wide open sack chasing Riley Leonard and just let him go. He definitely had a brain fart and thought it was still practice. Probably can ignore this note but it was weird seeing. Otherwise just moving around he looked pretty good. Had four tackles in the game.
Cornerbacks:
Melvin Smith is horrible. I mean horrible. Was a late add and didn’t belong.
Safeties:
Trey Rucker didn’t turn his head around at all on the big completion on the flea flicker to Jack Bech. Didn’t see anything during the week that made me impressed either.
Sebastian Castro made a nice play on Milroe preventing a 4th down pickup with his legs. Forced the fumble on Arian Smith. Was around the ball a lot. Doesn’t look twitched up like Cooper DeJean was last year but just might have a grinder type player here.
