2023 MLB Draft Profile: Arjun Nimmala

Florida, and specifically the Tampa Bay area, has become a hotspot for High School talent, with this year is no different with a couple of guys finding themselves high up on MLB Draft boards. With continued success, more and more teams are starting to draft from that area. This brings us to 17-year-old Arjun Nimmala, who is committed to Florida State — most of what we know about Nimmala is largely projection based, though that obviously is the case with all these guys.

But with Nimmala it’s a little different as we don’t have the same body of work readily available as we do with these college kids. Let’s take a look at his 2023 MLB Draft profile, shall we?

Scouting gradesHit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

When looking at Nimmala and his grades nothing jumps out. He isn’t really bad at anything but doesn’t seemingly have an elite trait or something that looks like it could easily carry to higher levels. But again with Nimmala, we have to heavily rely on projections.

He seems to have a lot of raw power and has shown an ability to spray the ball all over the field. Tools that are essential for being able to adjust to higher levels of play.

Nimmala also prides himself on being a “patient-aggressive” hitter. But also at times gets overly aggressive and works himself into outs. Many scouts believe if he can become a more disciplined hitter, he can really tap into that power he has shown.

There definitely is the potential for Nimmala to be a great major-league hitter, he will just need a bit of time and work before we start to see that.

At 6-foot-1, Nimmala has a typical build for an MLB shortstop. He seemingly has the glove and range to hold down the position and will likely stick at short for most of his career; his speed, while not elite, shouldn’t hold back his ability to play the position.

If everything does come together for Nimmala, we are looking at a guy who could grade as plus in multiple different categories. It’s a long-term investment for sure, but one that could yield big results if he is developed properly.

In drafting Arjun Nimmala, you are mostly drafting the player he can become. The tools may not all be there right now, but they certainly are in the works of getting there. The sky is the limit for Nimmala. Truth be told, I have zero clue how his career will play out.

I think in his case it will depend a decent amount on where he ends up. He has a skill set that if tapped into correctly could work wonders for any team. It’s just a matter of figuring out where that is.
