2023 Deer Forecasts: Early October
10/10/23 Weekly Outlook
Halleluiah, the heat is finally gone. This week brings colder temperatures and improved hunting conditions. Every day this week looks to be a potentially good sit. Temperatures for the week will sit slightly below the historical averages for these dates.
We are in the New Moon phase; from this point on, the amount of moon we see will continue to get larger each night until we reach full moon on Saturday, Oct. 28th. This full moon is nicknamed the Hunter’s full moon inspired by the Native Americans and their activities preparing for winter. Somehow that last sentence got Tim McGraw’s Indian Outlaw stuck in my head.
If we have one thing to complain about this week, it’s two things. Yeah, you read that right. First, the barometric pressure just isn’t very good this week and, secondly, it’s not the end of October or the first week in November. I have to say that while I certainly have not seen any sort of rut-like activity that certainly doesn’t mean it isn’t going on. In some ways, according to the numbers that I have recorded in the past, this time period may be better than two weeks from now. Get out there and good luck.
10/6/23 Weekend Update
This weekend looks wet and not very favorable for deer hunting. Low barometric pressures and warmer-than-average temperatures will not do us any favors. The good news is, Saturday’s high temperature is predicted to be 65. Sunday morning temperatures will be in the low 40s. Shame the Game commission and our deer herd take Sunday off. Moon conditions for tonight are not great with a solunar rating of only a 1.
On the other hand, major predicted feeding times are in or close to the time we should be in the woods. I have heard of a number of buck sightings in daylight hours and have multiple reports of deer fighting or having tines broken. I still feel like we are a ways off from seeing heavy rutting activity and we all know that ol October lull is waiting to bite us in the ass.
10/2/23 Weekly Outlook
Saturday was the state wide opener for Pennsylvania and conditions were not the greatest. Many people saw some rainfall and temperatures were less than ideal. The warming trend turns it up a few notches this week with temps predicted to reach or be near 80 degrees. Despite the insanely high temps the forecast this week, doesn’t look too shabby with high pressure throughout and favorable moon conditions.
The hope for this week is that the deer continue to follow their pre-fall patterns and move despite the crazy temps. At this time last year, several good buck were seen according to my reports with most sightings being right before dark. No reason based on the conditions that it can’t happen again, but I’m predicting that there will be some slow nights because of the heat. Pack your thermacell and try to stay cool!
