Is 2023 the year the Bills finally win the Super Bowl? They have one of the best quarterbacks on the planet and are coming off a 13-win season. Who knows what that season looks like if the Damar Hamlin thing doesn’t happen? With training camp around the corner, let’s preview what you need to know about the 2023 Buffalo Bills.
Position Battles:
1: Tight End: Dawson Knox vs. Dalton Kincaid
I don’t think the Bills traded up in the first round for Dalton Kincaid for him not to play. The funny thing is, both of these guys aren’t traditional tight ends. Both are more in the receiver-based role rather than in-line blockers.
By now you probably know my thoughts on Kincaid. It’s probably more likely that both players are on the field at the same time with Kincaid playing a big body slot role. Still, this will be a battle to watch to see who emerges as the premier option.
2: Linebacker: Dorian Williams vs. Terrel Bernard
Tremaine Edmunds is gone. Someone has to take his spot. Will it be 2022 third-round pick Bernard or 2023 third-round pick Williams? One of the former third-round picks has to work, right?
3: Defensive Tackle: Poona Ford, DaQuan Jones, Tim Settle, Jordan Phillips
Ed Oliver just got paid but the other defensive tackle spot is unsettled. DaQuan Jones did an adequate job last year but Buffalo also brought in Poona Ford from Seattle. Tim Settle and Jordan Phillips are also two big body vets that can be rotated in. The defensive line depth Buffalo has is great as long as Von Miller stays healthy.
Ready To Breakout: Kaiir Elam
It was kind of a shaky start for Elam as a rookie last year. The former first-round pick out of Florida was beat out for a starting spot by sixth-round pick Christian Benford. Elam notched two picks during the regular season but really upped his game during the playoffs. I thought he looked outstanding during the playoffs and just got better as the year went along. I expect a breakout year coming for Elam who establishes himself as a real lockdown starter opposite of Tre’Davious White.
Rookie to Watch: O’Cyrus Torrence
O’Cyrus Torrence was my number one rated guard in the draft and should make an immediate impact on day one. The former Florida product is built like a house too. This is a Bills offensive line that needs all the help it can get too. If Torrence proves to be a stud right away, it will do wonders for this team.
Fantasy Sleeper: James Cook / Damien Harris
I just listed both because I don’t think either name is going high in fantasy drafts. There has been talk that protecting Josh Allen is going to be more of a priority moving forward. Do you sign Damien Harris to not use him? This year, more than ever, I think the Bills’ go-to running back has fantasy value.
For me, that guy is James Cook. I’m higher on him than most. I also do think that Harris should be taken as a handcuff option.
