Yik Yak Is Back
Yik Yak, a social media app that started in 2013, is making a return after being shut down a few years ago per Barstool. What initially began as an anonymous tea-spilling machine across college campuses could now see a few changes. Nazis, racists, and all of the worst scumbags originally had the app shuttered after festering across many college and workplace community groups. With a younger audience and many current events to discuss, it will be quite interesting to see how the app performs in 2021.
Everyone was forced to stay home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which had wide-sweeping effects both outside and inside the sports world. Even though restrictions are somewhat easing, many still maintain a stronger online presence than ever before. The app was already popular when it was released close to a decade ago. Yik Yak’s market value shot up to over $400 million and it has the potential to reach new heights with many using their phones and computers. However, it remains to be seen how well received it will be in these changing times. Yik Yak had a pretty crude reputation back in the day, as its anonymous nature allowed users to say whatever they wanted. Gossip, rumors, insults, you name it. It was, in all honesty, before my time, but it would not surprise me to see my college classmates take a liking to it.
A Slippery Slope
Regulating the app will also be quite an interesting venture. Many have called for stricter enforcement of policies to reduce the amount of bullying and racist content, but with mature audiences likely being Yik Yak’s targeted demographic, the app developers will have to tow a fine line. On the one hand, people should be able to speak their minds and interact with their communities, but there is no room for offensive remarks. Many users could end up getting banned or suspended depending on what they say. Of course, a location-based group chat will create some real-world problems as well. Upon its release, I imagine we will quickly see how it is destined to fare.
