The Vendetta Sports Fantasy Show is on hiatus for now but that doesn’t mean the content train stops. It’s time to bring back one of our favorite series (link to an example done in the past) for the upcoming season. Who the f*ck is that guy! Could Lawrence Cager go from an unknown to fantasy football legend? Here’s why you should remember the name.
Darren Waller is officially retired, which means someone is going to have to step up at the tight end position for the Giants. Maybe the right answer for who will replace him will surprise you.
Theo Johnson could be the long term answer but he’s a rookie that really didn’t produce much at Penn State. Plus, we know rookie tight ends picked in the 4th round usually don’t do anything for a year or two.
The Giants also have Daniel Bellinger. Except if you have been reading my draft notes, you know he sucks and has zero chance to ever become an impact fantasy weapon. Bellinger, 23, has done nothing thus far during his two years in the league. Congrats on being a serviceable blocker.
What if Cager is the guy here?
Who?
Well… if you’re a die hard college football fan, you already know who this is. Cager, 26, spent three years at the University of Miami before finishing up at Georgia. He’s always been a big body at 6-foot-5 but now he’s transitioning into a tight end instead of a slow wide receiver. A move that could ultimately save his career.
The early word on the street is that Cager looks really good and could be poised for a big role.
“Tight end Darren Waller’s retirement opened opportunities for others. It looked this spring like Cager and fourth-round pick Theo Johnson will be asked to fill that pass-catching role. Both received some first-team reps and made plays in what primarily serves as a passing camp. Coach Brian Daboll even mentioned that Cager was “probably one of the most improved players throughout the offseason,” which could open the door for him to make a significant contribution this season. — Jordan Raanan”
Nobody is saying go spend an arm and a leg to draft Cager in the early rounds. He’s more so a name to keep on the radar. If Cager starts to steal this job, don’t be overly surprised. It’s not like the Giants have a bevy of talented targets to go with the ball either.
