Would the Miami Dolphins really move on from Mike McDaniel?

The Miami Dolphins have been one of the best success stories in the NFL. Tua Tagovailoa was looking like an MVP candidate before his concussions. First-year head coach Mike McDaniel lead them to an 8-3 start and looked to compete with the Buffalo Bills for the AFC East crown.

These Dolphins are now 8-8, and rumors are flying about potential firings. Armando Salguero of Outkick believes everyone should be on the hot seat if the Dolphins fail to make the postseason, including McDaniel.

Even if the Dolphins lose out and miss the postseason, McDaniel should be far from the hot seat. This would be Trey Daubert’s worst nightmare as the Brian Flores truthers would come out of their caves. In all seriousness, firing McDaniel after one season would set the Dolphins back. He isn’t perfect but has proven he’s able to handle the job.

The concussion issues with Tua sparked a lot of controversies, especially towards McDaniel. He let Tua continue the game against the Bills when he took a big hit. Four days later, he let Tua start the game against the Bengals, where he later had to be carted off from a gruesome head injury. This isn’t an easy task for any head coach to handle, however. More blame should go toward the league, and McDaniel was just used as the scapegoat.

McDaniel also provides what a lot of head coaches can’t; a sense of humor. The Dolphins signed quarterback Mike Glennon for depth, and McDaniel provided some humor at the press conference like usual.

It still isn’t fair to say this collapse is all on McDaniel. No quarterback is going to play well with a banged-up o-line. The same o-line also ranks 20th in run block win rate, and 31st in pass blocking. Yet this offense ranks sixth in total yards and is top-10 in points per game. Goes to show how well McDaniel’s coaching ability is from the trenches.

Rumors can fly, but the McDaniel slander has to stop. He’s the best thing to happen to this organization in a while and is shaping them to be Super Bowl Contenders. They still have a chance at the postseason, so let’s give it some time.
