I saw an article from PFT the other day tracking the head coaches in the NFL who won’t be at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. Sorry, not sorry, if I’m running an NFL team and my head coach doesn’t attend, I’m automatically firing them and it’s not really a discussion. It’s a totally embarrassing look for more reasons than one.
A: This idea that the on-field performance doesn’t matter is a lie. Anybody that says that only says that because they’re uneducated on what to watch for.
A prime example can be found just last year. I watched CJ Stroud throw at the Combine. I said it was the best quarterback performance I’ve ever seen at the event. I immediately moved him up to number one on my quarterback rankings.
You’re really going to sit here and pretend like that was an accident or does the performance on the field matter at the combine? You think I just got lucky?
When I said Justin Jefferson had the best wide receiver workout I’ve ever seen, did I just get lucky there too? The only thing I regret is not putting more stock into it, which is why I didn’t repeat that mistake and moved Stroud over Young in last year’s draft.
B: Even if you’re an idiot and you can’t see why the on-field performance matters, that’s only half of the actual Combine. This is the one chance you get to interview all of these guys. Find out their character, background, influences, love for football, etc. As a head coach, the idea that you wouldn’t want to be part of that is insane.
There is only one reason to not attend the event as an NFL head coach. It’s if you’re not smart enough to recognize the value in it. If my coach didn’t attend, they would be in the unemployment line yesterday. End of story.
