Is Buddy Hield really Thriving with the Philadelphia 76ers?
When the 76ers acquired Buddy Hield at the deadline, the consensus was that it was a pretty solid move. Even Celtic supporter Trey came out and explained why it actually was a good deal for the Sixers. It’s fairly easy to see why this is the case. Hield gives the Sixers some shooting they desperately need, allowing them to hopefully tread water as they pray for a Joel Embiid return in the playoffs.
But in just a few short weeks of being with the team, Hield seems to be playing the best basketball of his career.
I’ll just get it out of the way, these stats need to be taken with a grain of salt. Joel Embiid isn’t playing right now, allowing Hield to fire away and score as much as possible. The offense is run through him and Tyrese Maxey, so these stats need to be put into a little context. I doubt he’s scoring at this volume if/when Embiid comes back.
On the other hand, though, it’s reassuring to see those shooting splits. Even if he can’t keep this volume up, hitting threes at that rate is really all this offense needs. Which should be very possible with the threat of Embiid.
This season is likely done for Philadelphia. They will end up making the playoffs but likely lose in the first round unless Embiid is somehow able to come back. But going into this offseason, they have nobody on the books besides Embiid, so you at least have a clean slate of sorts.
But I think Buddy Hield has shown that he is here to stay in Philadelphia and can be just what this offense needs. Hey, maybe at some point, they can get past the second round. I still doubt that one, though.
