I dropped my running back handcuff post the other day. If you missed that, click here. However, I felt the need to do a follow-up because 99% of fantasy “experts” make the same mistake over and over again when picking a handcuff.
Sometimes you have to be unconventional in your approach in order to win your fantasy league. Most people would tell you to take the insurance policy as your handcuff option.
We know how this works, right? Every noob that talks fantasy but has no idea what they’re talking about tells you to proceed the same exact way. I’ll give you a perfect example of how 99% of people proceed. I have Rhamondre Stevenson in my league. Most people would tell you to go grab Ezekiel Elliott as the handcuff.
Except, that’s not the way I operate. If I lose my top end guys to injury, I’m not going to win anyone. It’s first or last for Trey. Again, I’m not sure what the so called fantasy “experts” tell you but the goal is to win. I have no interest coming in 3rd, 4th, 5th, whatever.
Instead, target handcuffs from other teams. Maybe take Tyjae Spears if someone else has Derrick Henry. It’s basically a lottery ticket. If Henry goes down, you have negotiating power on a trade. This works better in keeper or dynasty leagues when you call sell off the handcuff for a long term asset. If the team is willing to pay for an inferior replacement, thank them and take whatever you can get.
Let me know what you think in the comments. Have I convinced you? I’m basically telling you to be a prick in your draft. Steal backups from guys you don’t have. If the lottery ticket cashes, now you have an additional starter with your team full of starters. Food for thought.
