The Miami Marlins are always open for business and they have an overabundance of pitching. It’s why the Marlins made the Luis Arraez trade a year ago. Miami still has a glut of starting pitching they can move and teams should really try to buy low on Edward Cabrera while they still can.
Jesus Luzardo and Cabrera seem to be the two names available on the market. Cabrera, in my opinion, is the more enticing trade target for several reasons.
A: Cabrera is under team control through 2028. Finding starting pitching is hard enough. Finding cost-controlled starting pitching is even harder.
B: This is the ultimate buy-low spot. The biggest mistake teams make is by giving up talented pitchers too early. Cabrera just completed his age-25 season and posted a 4.24 ERA.
Framber Valdez had a 5.86 ERA his age-25 season. Imagine if Houston gave up on him?
Tyler Glasnow had a 4.27 ERA his age-24 season right before the Pirates gave up on him. Then Glasnow immediately exploded with the Rays.
I can go over 100 examples of pitchers that started off slow and eventually found their groove. Cabrera right now represents a high end pitcher that fits that category. If you don’t buy now you won’t get the chance to do so later. OR… it’s going to cost you way more down the line while burning cost-controlled years of control.
C: It’s hard to ignore these metrics. The pure stuff isn’t the problem.
What’s the problem? Cabrera walks too many guys and he hasn’t been durable. It’s the only reason why he’s available. Otherwise, when the lightbulb finally clicks, he won’t be. Pitching at the MLB level is hard. Cabrera has the talent. He just needs to clean a few things up. Get this guy in your pitching program and figure it out. These are the risks clubs should be willing to take to find stud pitching.
The truth of the matter is that you can’t teach this. You can’t teach a 95 MPH changeup. Since 2022, opponents are hitting just .180 against his changeup.
We’re talking about a guy that’s really hard to hit and creates a lot of ground balls. He’s everything you want from a pure stuff perspective.
The time to buy is now. Cabrera was a top 100 prospect for a reason. Not every pitcher that gets called up right away lights the world on fire. Frankly, very few do. These things take time and buying Cabrera now is a rare opportunity MLB teams should be trying to take advantage of. Especially teams that need starting pitching. Guys like this don’t grow on trees. Get him in your pitching program and figure it out.
