Twins Trade Luis Arraez To Marlins In Exchange For Pablo Lopez
News rocked baseball today as Minnesota and Miami completed a trade involving infielder Luis Arraez and starting pitcher Pablo Lopez. The Twins will also receive shortstop Jose Salas and outfielder Byron Chourio.
Luis Arraez is coming off a season in which he led the American League with a .316 average. He also received MVP votes, an All-Star nod, and a Silver Slugger Award. The second baseman has a career slash of .314/.375/.420.
Pitcher Pablo Lopez completed his first full Major League season last year. He was very dependable as a Marlin, going 10-10 with a 3.75 earned run average, 174 strikeouts, and a 3.71 FIP.
Lopez will be expected to be the ace of Minnesota’s rotation accompanied by Joe Ryan, Sonny Gray, Bailey Ober, Tyler Mahle, Kenta Maeda, and Chris Paddack. The Twins are looking to improve from their 77-84 third-place finish last year, especially with the return of Maeda and Paddack.
The Marlins adding Arraez is interesting, especially with the acquisition of fellow second baseman Jean Segura earlier in the offseason. Jazz Chisholm was the primary second baseman for the team last year, and will play center field in 2023.
Miami for sure wants to figure out a way to get out of the rut they’ve been in for a while. They went an awful 69-93 with a fourth-place finish in the National League East. Adding an offensive piece like Arraez will be beneficial.
Either way, Miami enhanced its lineup for 2023 and is looking to compete in the stacked National League east. Both teams are trying to push their way into a potential wild card slot, so this trade is solid for both franchises.
