The Marlins Are Thirsty For Triston Casas

Triston Casas is the face of the young movement going on with the Boston Red Sox right now. We know the story on Chaim Bloom by now. He really cares about building up the young farm talent. Not so much about trying to win at the MLB level. That’s just who he is. What if the Red Sox trade Casas before they ever even get to cash in on his young talent?

That appears to be a very real possibility. According to a report in the Miami Herald, it appears that the Marlins really want Casas. Like to really want to the point where they’re willing to give up anything to make it happen. It’s mentioned that Pablo Lopez and others could be up for grabs if it means getting Casas.

I’m not saying trade rumors aren’t rare but this one feels odd. Casas, of course, is from Pembroke Pines Florida and went to American Heritage. It’s almost as if the Marlins are leaking this to try to recruit a college football player in the transfer portal to come back home.

Up until this point, there have been no indications that Casas is even remotely available. In fact, Boston cut Eric Hosmer because they have given the first base job to Casas. They are all in. That’s what makes this so weird.

This feels like Miami’s way of saying they’re willing to overpay. I guess everyone is available for the right price? Casas is a ready to go MLB contributor so, of course, everyone that needs a first basemen would want him. In this instance, it’s fair to suggest that the hometown connection here may give the Marlins extra incentive to go the extra mile. Bloom traded Mookie Betts so if the Marlins are willing to overpay, I’m quite sure he will be willing to listen.

How far are the Marlins willing to go here? I think that’s the real question. Is Miami willing to do a package of Jazz Chisholm, Edward Cabrera, Sixto Sanchez, and an extra throw-in piece? To me, that’s the only way I’m even willing to consider trading a guy like Casas.

Furthermore, the Marlins have a bit of a crowded infield now after they just signed Jean Segura. They also have Jon Berti, Joey Wendle, Miguel Rojas, and Xavier Edwards. Could you make the argument that Chisholm is expendable in a trade if it means bringing Casas home? I think you could argue that’s a yes.

Additionally, it is way easier to find a first baseman than it is to replace middle infield production. If Boston views Chisholm as a successor to Xander Bogaerts then that’s something maybe you talk yourself into exploring. If the Red Sox trade Casas, Trey Mancini is sitting there on the free agent market to sign as a quick replacement. Hosmer is also available. Justin Turner can play first base too. Right now there is no answer to replacing Bogaerts. The fan base would rally around a guy like Jazz too.

How far are the Marlins willing to go? That’s the question. It’s the only question that matters. There’s no reason to answer the phone unless it’s an overpay. If the Red Sox view this as an opportunity to acquire controllable arms like Sanchez, Lopez, and or Sanchez, then it’s a route you have to consider.

I have a hard time believing this trade will get done. Bloom has to know he’s on the hot seat and trading a guy like Casas is something that will get him fired. That is unless it’s a Godfather offer you don’t say no to.
