Say goodbye to the Spring Game. Well, say goodbye until College Football grows a leadership branch and takes care of many of the flaws in the transfer portal and NIL system.
More and more teams are going to cancel their Spring game. I recently tried to look up the schedule for Spring Games this year. A lot of teams have canceled them outright. If they’re having them, they’re no longer televised like in years past.
Say whatever you want about Matt Rhule but he hit the nail on the head right here.
“I don’t know that yet,”Rhule said. “But I’ll be honest with you, I highly doubt it. Fundamentally, I hate to say it like this, it’s really because last year, we were one of the more televised spring games and I dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities after that. To go out and bring in a bunch of players, and then showcase them for all the other schools to watch, that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. The word ‘tampering’ doesn’t exist anymore. It’s just absolute, free, open, common market. I don’t necessarily want to open up to the outside world. I don’t want these guys all being able to watch our guys and say, ‘Wow, he looks like a pretty good player. Let’s go get him.’
Of course, there would be an easy fix to this. All College Football would need to do is limit the transfer portal to one window. Instead, there are essentially two windows and players can pretty much leave whenever they want to. Right now the Spring game is basically free advertising for players to get plucked by other programs. Instead of watching them in the Spring, rival teams can watch them in the Fall when the games actually count.
Again, all that really needs to be done here is a simple scheduling fix to when the players are allowed to enter the portal. Until that gets fixed, RIP Spring Games.
Which again proves the point that we need a commissioner for the sport but I guess nobody wants to take the lead on that soooooo.
