What’s More Valuable In The NFL? Pass Rush or Coverage

There’s always a debate going on between the value of something in the NFL. Today, we’re taking a look at what’s more valuable between pass rush and coverage. Which is more valuable? Which matters more? Well, it depends.

One Elite Pass Rusher vs One Elite Coverage Player

In a situation where a team can only have one of each, give me the one elite pass rusher over one elite coverage player. This is because it’s much easier to make a single elite corner or safety irrelevant than it is to make one elite pass rusher irrelevant. In the 2020 NFL championship game, the Buccaneers did a very good job avoid Jaire Alexander because they simply threw at him as little as possible. However, when anyone plays the Los Angeles Rams, Aaron Donald is always having an impact on the game. You simply can’t avoid him, he will ruin something. That’s why a single elite pass rusher is more valuable than a single elite defensive back

Elite Secondary vs Elite Pass Rush Unit

In this situation, everything else is kind of average for a defense. So, give me the elite secondary. If you have a secondary that is built of elite players or have a sum of their parts being an elite secondary, they will have a much bigger impact on the game than a team with an elite pass rush unit. An elite pass rush unit can be beaten with quick passes and a run game. While an elite secondary can eliminate an opposing team’s passing attack almost entirely, an elite pass-rushing unit can’t do the same.

There’s no easy answer to this. Give me an elite pass rusher over an elite defensive back, and give me an elite secondary unit over an elite pass-rushing unit. At the end of the day, both help each other.
