What are the Brewers getting with DL Hall? Milwaukee’s new left-handed starter better be a gem to make the Corbin Burnes trade worth it. (David Richard-USA TODAY Sports)

What Are The Brewers Getting With DL Hall?

DL Hall will make or break the Corbin Burnes trade. Yes, the Brewers also got Joey Ortiz and a draft pick for Burnes. Still, if Milwaukee wants to remain competitive, Hall will need to replace some of the innings that Burnes has been providing. What exactly are the Brewers getting in Hall? Let’s talk about it.

Hall, 25, posted a 3.26 ERA in 18 games last year. The Orioles didn’t trust Hall to slot into their rotation last year despite the obvious holes. He’s expected to take Burnes’ spot in the Brewers rotation. The former first round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft has talent but his ceiling remains undefined.

The left-hander is mostly a three-pitch guy (fastball, slider, and changeup) along with the occasional curveball. The fastball sits at about 96 and the slider at 87. Velocity isn’t the issue. It’s mostly the sample size and lack of control. Even a year ago, Hall posted a 4.22 ERA in AAA. In the past, Hall has done a good job at missing bats but leaves too many balls in the middle of the plate and walked 5.5 batters per 9 last year in the minors.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you Hall stinks. What I’m telling you is that this is a gamble. The stuff might be there. The track record of success is not. Is that enough to get comfortable in a return for a premier starter?

The new Brewers starter is about to turn 26 and has next to no production to show for it. If the Brewers want to not look foolish on the Burnes trade, Hall needs to come through. They better be right because on the surface, it looks like a no-brainer trade for Baltimore.
