Orioles Trade For Corbin Burnes
The new ownership group in Baltimore isn’t screwing around. Day one on the job and they just trade for Corbin Burnes. Not a bad debut move, huh? The Orioles have landed Burnes in exchange for DL Hall, Joey Ortiz, and the 34th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.
Jeff Passan at ESPN was the first to report the news:
The Orioles have an ace! Burnes, 29, is a free agent after the 2024 MLB Season. Yes, this is a pure rental, but maybe the new ownership group can actually get a player like this extended. The California native sported a 3.39 ERA in 32 starts a season ago. The dominant right-hander also won the Cy Young Award in 2021. This is a guy that’s going to plug right into the top of the rotation.
Milwaukee gets a decent package here. DL Hall is likely viewed as the headliner. Hall, 25, is a former first round pick in 2017. He has limited MLB experience having made just 29 appearances in two years at the big league level. Hall will go into Milwaukee’s rotation. His future outcome will make or break this deal.
Ortiz is viewed as a defensive first infielder that needs to develop his hit tool to stick. Does this mean that Milwaukee found their Willy Adames replacement in this deal? Adames is also a free agent after this upcoming season.
Getting the comp pick is a nice added bonus. It’s what Milwaukee would have gotten had they lost Burnes in free agency, so getting the pick now is a plus.
The Orioles won 101 games last year with a weak rotation. What can they do with Burnes as the headliner in 2024? It’s exciting times ahead in Baltimore.
