Ryan Kerrigan Signs with Philadelphia

Earlier today, edge rusher Ryan Kerrigan announced that he would be signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. The 32-year-old four-time Pro Bowl selection joins the Eagles after a remarkable decade-long stint with the Washington Football Team.

Kerrigan was drafted to Washington as the 16th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Purdue. Over his ten seasons in the nation’s capital, he racked up 95.5 sacks, good for the WFT franchise record. He saw reduced time last season after the WFT prioritized their future stars in Montez Sweat and Chase Young. Although both sides were open to a return once Kerrigan hit free agency, the emergence of Sweat and Young certainly made it less likely. Washington also selected two more defensive ends in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Philadelphia Eagles Outlook

Philadelphia signed Kerrigan to a one-year deal in hopes that he would provide the same defensive leadership he brought to their NFC East rivals. The Eagles ended the 2020 NFL season with a 4-11-1 record, finishing last in their division. They will spend this upcoming season feeling out whether Jalen Hurts can be a viable quarterback. Philly entered this offseason with a lengthy list of needs and holes on their roster. Cayne Lander gave them an A+ for taking wide receiver Devonta Smith with their 2021 first-round pick. Trey Daubert handed the Eagles a B- for their overall 2021 draft class.

Make no mistake about it, Philadelphia is very much in the midst of a rebuild. Alex Chick ranked them as the worst buy in the NFC East on the SimBull NFL Market. Signing Ryan Kerrigan should help Philadelphia develop their young defensive pieces and provide veteran leadership that will be much needed in their locker room.
