Weston McKennie Among Names Left Out of Juventus First Team
It looks like Weston McKennie’s time with Juventus is officially over.
McKennie is one of multiple players to be excluded from Juventus’ first-team plans for next season. Joining him are Leonardo Bonucci, Arthur Melo and Denis Zakaria. All four players will not take part in the club’s preseason tour in the U.S. and are now immediately available on the market.
McKennie has made 96 total appearances for Juventus during his one-and-a-half stint in Turin, scoring 13 goals in those appearances. He also helped Juventus win the SuperCoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia titles. However, after a short time with the club, he will have to find a new home next season.
This is not too surprising. The USMNT midfielder has been linked with a move away from Juventus this summer after an uninspiring loan spell with Leeds United last spring.
While some may have thought McKennie might have had another shot with Juventus, this was apparently never going to happen. Both McKennie and Bonucci were told by the club that they were to have no contact with manager Massimiliano Allegri. They were also told that they would only be training with the youth teams, not the senior team.
This is an aggressive move to force McKennie out. Juventus is in entering a semi-rebuild year after missing out on Champions League qualification last season. McKennie is clearly not part of the club’s plans going forward and will now be on the move this summer.
Borussia Dortmund, Roma and Brighton have all shown interest in signing the American midfielder. It is going to be interesting to see where he ends up next year and if he can re-find his mojo at his new club.
