What may have been thought of as common knowledge is now confirmed. The Spurs only consider Victor Wembanyama (obviously), and Devin Vassell as untouchables on the Spurs roster according to Hoops Rumors. Victor Wembanyama being considered as a generational prospect is almost seen as an underestimate, he exceeded the high expectations forced on him. Although it will now never be recognized officially, he was the more deserving candidate over that fraud Rudy Gobert.
Devin Vassell makes sense as well, although the Spurs roster stinks, Vassell was the clear 2nd best option on the Spurs roster. Before the season last year, Vassell signed an extension with the Spurs, so it makes sense that they seem Vassell as untouchable. However, the rest of the team is up for grabs. For the rest of the squad, it was almost like a tryout to see if you should have a roster spot in San Antonio. I believe the Spurs will try to retain Jeremy Sochan if possible. Keldon Johnson is considered a fan favorite on the Spurs but his contract might be a tad too expensive ($19 million cap hit this year, $17.5 million the next two years) to keep around, especially if the Spurs can trade in a better piece for him. Tre Jones has carved out a role on the Spurs roster as well as the only guy to really feed Wemby more than he teammates. I think those are the 3 guys with Wemby and Vassell they’d like to keep if possible.
Some other role players they might be trying to keep are Cedi Osman, Julian Champagnie, and Malakai Branham. However, they would like these guys to be on the end of the rotation rather than the first unit off the bench for them. I think Zach Collins is gone, but that could be another they like to keep.
The Spurs are honestly in a great spot, despite their record, they were much more competitive than the year before Wemby and could have won more close games. The Spurs could continue this rebuild gracefully, or they can trade in some draft picks/players to be in a win-now mode. Although considered a weaker draft, the Spurs do have the 4th and 8th overall pick in this year’s draft. The best part of this is that the Spurs do not have to force anything. Personally, I give them until the 2025-2026 season before they make the playoffs. However, the Spurs should just let everything come to them. If something comes up for them, explore it and see if it’s worth it, if not, just wait it out. Victor Wembanyama is inevitable, his time will come.
What do you think, should Devin Vassell be considered an untouchable? Should more on the Spurs roster be considered untouchable? What is the Spurs best course of action? Would staying put in this draft and keeping their roster together and prepare for the 2025-2026 season be better than pushing in the chips in now? Let me know in the comments below.
