UFC 268 To Feature Covington vs. Usman Rematch

The UFC has announced that Colby Covington will get his rematch against Kamaru Usman for the belt at UFC 268 in November. As a massive Kamaru Usman fan, I am pumped for this fight. Colby Covington, as much as he is hated across the UFC, is potentially the only real welterweight contender who can give Usman a real challenge.

Usman vs. Covington I

The first matchup between Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington at UFC 245 was an absolute blast. For what felt like the first time ever, Kamaru Usman was not dominating the way he usually does. Covington was as close to Usman’s level as we have seen in the last 2 years. He was connecting on punches, throwing combinations, and seemingly running through Usman’s right hand. He also had his jaw broken in the first round and then fought for another 3.5 rounds before getting TKO’ed. And it was not like Usman was not on his game that night, because he absolutely was. However, Covington was just game.

What Happens This Time Around?

I think the result of the fight will be the same, but the actual fight itself will look much different. Covington realized last time that he could get Usman into a brawl, which benefited Covington’s fighting style. This time around, I would imagine that Usman will try to slow down the pace and use his wrestling to smother Covington. If Kamaru Usman is at the top of his game, nobody can beat him, but if he slips up, Covington has the power and skill to put him out. I talked previously about why I think Colby Covington deserves to be a top 15 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC, but if you watch this fight, you will see what I am talking about. His combination of toughness, power, and overall game is why he is so dominant against the majority of the welterweight division.
