UCLA Lands Five-Star Class of ’22 Center Adem Bona

UCLA has secured the commitment of Class of 2022 five-star center Adem Bona, per an announcement with The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Bona chose the Bruins over Kentucky and John Calipari.

The 6-9 center plays at Prolific Prep in Napa, California and played on the Nike EYBL circuit with Team WhyNot this past summer – an organization assisted by former Bruin and current Los Angeles Laker Russell Westbrook. Bona averaged 11.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.4 blocks with the team. He also represented the Turkish men’s basketball team at the FIBA U19 World Championships, averaging 8.4 points and 1.9 blocks in around 17 minutes of action.

Bona is coach Mick Cronin’s third recruit of the class, joining fellow five-star Amari Bailey and four-star point guard Dylan Andrews.

In an interview with 247Sports, Bona said he wrestled with the decision between UCLA and Kentucky, but chose the Bruins because of his potential fit in Cronin’s sytem.

“I’ve spoken with Mick Cronin, I’ve watched them practice and I feel like I fit in with the system very well. The way they play, they play a lot of moving basketball, they move a lot, and they use their bigs high and low and use them in multiple positions. I feel like that is going to be a good fit for me.”

Cronin and the UCLA staff are also in the mix for top-30 prospect Mark Mitchell and five-star center Yohan Traore, although Bona’s commitment could see Traore look elsewhere.
