Tyreek Hill Thought Patrick Mahomes Was Trash At First
This idea that Patrick Mahomes was a lock to become a superstar coming out of the draft is a bit of revisionist history. Mahomes was a lump of clay that had enormous potential but needed the right environment. Insert Andy Reid and Kansas City and you get this. Mahomes still always needed major work coming into the league.
Tyreek Hill shared what it was like when he first met Patrick Mahomes. Hill thought Mahomes was “trash” not a joke:
“I thought he was trash,” Hill said, “I ain’t gonna cap. I ain’t gonna cap. I ain’t even gonna cap, man. When he first got there I was like, this is who y’all drafted right here? This is who y’all drafted? Hey but look, he proved me into a whole complete, I don’t know. That second year, like his quarterback mechanics were different. It was like he was spending more time with his quarterback coach, spending more time with Coach Reid, like learning the offense. Dude was like different.”
Mahomes was far from perfect coming into the draft. He made really bad decisions in college and threw the ball across the field right to defenders. The arm talent was super special. Reid will always deserve more credit than he gets for actually developing Mahomes into the player he became. He’s not as good anywhere else.
Of course, Mahomes is now a Super Bowl champion and the face of the league. The Mahomes stories will never get old though. Remember that time Mahomes said he still doesn’t know how to read defenses? You can say almost anything about Mahomes and you would believe it.
Speaking of remember when stories; remember when Jalen Ramsey called Tyreek Hill a “return specialist”? How has that just been forgotten?
