Well, that was scary. Miami Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa left during the second half of the team’s 31-10 blowout loss to the Buffalo on Thursday night. He exited after taking a scary hit from Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin. The collision occurred when Tua scrambled for a first down on fourth and four. In real-time, the hit didn’t seem like anything crazy, but it is when Tua started tensing up, with his arms going stiffly outward, fans got immediately concerned.
This is the third major concussion that Tua has sustained in his NFL career and not the first time we have seen him tense up like this. NFL Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez said “it might be time,” for Tua to hang up the cleats and call it a career. This would be to the dismay of the Miami Dolphins, who just gave Tua a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension this off-season. As someone who is only in his fifth year in the league, it is very concerning that the NFL community is even having conversations like this.
Tua lowered his head and slammed it into the chest of Damar Hamlin, who if you recall had a scary incident when he was taken off the field in an ambulance in week 17 of last season. I do not think this was intentional by Hamlin, but it is ironic nonetheless. Tua was able to walk off the field by himself which is a good sign.
When asked about the injury, Miami head coach Mike McDaniel said, “The furthest thing from my mind is what is the timeline, We just need to evaluate and worry about my teammate, like the rest of the guys are. We will get more information tomorrow and take it day by day from there” per NFL.COM. Tua will undergo further tests today to see the extent of the concussion, but the fact that this kind of injury is becoming the norm for Tagovailoa is concerning. My thoughts are with him, and I wish him a speedy recovery.
